JetBrains AI Assistant brings chat and agent features into IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, and the rest of the JetBrains IDE family. Its bring-your-own-key mode accepts any OpenAI-compatible provider.

Setup

1

Open the provider settings

Settings → Tools → AI Assistant → Providers & API keys, then add an OpenAI-compatible provider.
2

Fill in the connection

3

Continue

Click Continue. AI Chat and the integrated agents now run on Opper — no JetBrains AI subscription required.

Choosing a model

The model is named per provider entry rather than fetched, so add one provider entry per model you want to switch between. Which AI Assistant features work depends on what the model supports — agents need tool calling.

Troubleshooting

Check the key is an Opper key (they start with op-) and that you chose the OpenAI-compatible provider type rather than OpenAI.
Copy the model ID exactly from the catalog, including the provider prefix.
A few AI Assistant features are tied to JetBrains’ own service rather than the configured provider. Chat and the integrated agents are the ones BYOK covers.
